Ports, Creeks and Landing Places in England and Wales 1575

Edit

The names of all the Ports, Creeks and Landing Places in England and Wales 1575 from The National Archives State Papers Domestic, SP12 p135

The need to enforce control of taxable goods and their potential landing places resulted in several lists of such places from 1565 onwards. The 1575 list, transcribed on a spreadsheet, records over 500 names covering all of England and Wales. The list is handwritten and I have had the names expertly extracted. I have reproduced the list as they are in the document. The order seems random but may have meant something at the time and may become clearer in the future. I have modernized some spellings where the place referred to is definite. Even so there will be issues locating some of these places and some may no longer exist. I have been able to make a few suggestions which may help but bear in mind that names were written more or less phonetically and we cannot know what mistakes may have been made with spelling or location. We basically exported the British accent of earlier centuries to the New World so pronouncing names with an Australian accent, for instance, may be beneficial in some cases.
